"Never gonna give you, never gonna let you down, never gonna run around"...
It's catchy! That's probably why for 37 years, the song has been getting stuck in our heads, going viral with the "Rick Roll" crazy, and has racked up a rare 1 billion views on YouTube.
So it makes sense that others would want to toss it into their tracks...so I guess it just assumed when hip hop artist Yung Gravy used to I thought was a sample of the song in his 2022 hit "Betty (Get Money)".
According to Astley, that's not the case. According to Reuters, the British singer has filed a lawsuit claiming that Yung Gravy "illegally used an impersonator who imitated Astley's distinctive baritone". The complaint says a singer named Popnick sounded so much like Astley that listeners could not tell the difference. Astley is not only suing Gravy, who's a UW-Madison graduate who's real name is Mathew Hauri, but also his record labels, Universal and Republic Records.
I've got both songs below, listen for yourself and see what you think!
