My wife Michaela and I have been watching the first few episodes of the original Law & Order reboot (and some of the 50 spins offs) and she get's a bit annoyed with me because each transition, I can't help but say out loud "DUN DUN".
There's actually a story behind that iconic sound. As NBC's Today Show reports, the show's creator Dick Wolfe asked the composer of the show's theme song, Mike Post, to come up with an effect for those show transitions. The article sites an interview that Post gave, saying "he sampled the sound of a jail door slamming shut as well as the sound of a man hitting an anvil with a hammer and some different drum noises his team came up with in the studio."
I never realized that! The reboot of the show stars a bunch of the original cast including Anthony Anderson and Sam Waterson, and airs in a Thursday night block on NBC along with the SVU and Organized Crime spinoffs.
