Happy Birthday MTV!

This past weekend, if you celebrated a birthday, you share a birthday weekend with one of the pioneers of cable TV and one of the pioneers of music, MTV. You wouldn’t really know it by watching now, but when MTV launched on August 1st, 1981, it was a channel that was not unlike a radio station, playing wall-to-wall music with VJs (instead of DJs) working in shifts, presenting music new and artist info in between music videos. The first video every played on MTV? The Buggles’ VIDEO KILLED THE RADIO STAR. Click on the site to see the very first moments of the TV network, as well as an interview with one of the original VJs Martha Quinn (who by the way, is a part of our iHeartRadio family, doing a radio show on our station in San Francisco, iHeart The 80s @ 103-7).

Here's the music video that started it all...
