When a president leaves office, he (or she) live a very privileged lifestyle for the rest of their lives. Former presidents get a pretty healthy pension, budget for travel, a staff, an office, and lifetime Secret Service protection. Plus, most former presidents sign very lucrative book deals and make a TON of money giving speeches. In fact, between their book deals and a major, wide-ranging production deal with Netflix to produce documentary and scripted programming, The Obamas have made hundreds of millions of dollars.
Aside from the material things, a former president gets one other powerful post-office perk...influence! Former presidents remain powerful people and when they comment on things in the world, people listen. That's why last weekend when President and Mrs.Obama released their 2019 Summer Playlist, it was treated as breaking news!
Some great music on their list including artists that are pretty wide-ranging from Drake to Van Morrison, from Billie Elish to Ella Fitzgerald. Oh, and Lil' Nas X's song of the summer, the hip hop/country crossover "Old Town Road".
