How to survive an earthquake

A 3.4 magnitude earthquake recently occurred just 60 miles west of Chicago, striking in northern Illinois. It's surprising, since the area isn't known for seismic activity.

Earthquakes are rare but not unprecedented in the Midwest. In March 2024, a 2.8 magnitude earthquake hit Germantown in southwestern Illinois. Small potatoes compared to California, but potatoes nonetheless. Here's what to do if a stronger earthquake ever hits:

1. If you have time, turn off cooking appliances to prevent potential fires.
2. If taking shelter indoors: before tremors start, open any exit doors so they don't end up jammed and make it hard to evacuate.
3. If in a car, avoid stopping near trees, buildings, and other structures.
