I typically help my parents put up their Christmas tree and decorations Thanksgiving weekend. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays so I definitely want to make sure it has it's time to shine. This year though my husband and I put up our own tree for the first time and we did it this past weekend already! If you didn't know my husband Jaime is from Mexico and just got here back in December of 2018. That first year we didn't put up a tree since he arrived December 16. Last year we were just too busy truthfully but this year we finally got a tree and decided to go for it. The tree was actually my Dad's from before he married my Mom so it's like 37 some years old! It was still in great shape though and we had plenty of ornaments because every year for Christmas we get a new ornament from my parents. While we were putting up our tree this past weekend I asked Jaime if he had a tree in his house growing up and I was quite surprised when he said this is the first Christmas tree he's ever had in his home. He said they barely had enough money to put food on the table so why would they spend it on a tree. That really put things into perspective for me. Jaime loves Christmas because of all the decorations and lights and really because of the real reason for the season so even though our decorations are up pretty early this year I was happy to do it so he could enjoy it. It's so cute because the first thing he does when he gets home now is plug in the tree!
Turns out by putting up our Christmas tree and decorations early, we might be even happier! According to Delish.com, psychoanalyst Steve McKeown mentions that "in a world full of stress and anxiety, people like to associate to things that make them happy and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of the childhood. Decorations are simply an anchor or pathway to those old childhood magical emotions of excitement. So putting up those Christmas decorations early extends the excitement!" With how crazy this year has already been I saw if you want to put up those decorations early do it! Find the things that make you happy and surround yourself with them!
