Milwaukee is a big bobblehead city. Home to the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum (right above Stack'd Burger Bar and Colectivo Coffee on S. 1st Street where the Third Ward and Walkers Point meet up), bobbleheads typically have depicted athletes, politicians, and sometimes Hollywood celebrities. The museum itself, which has over 6,500 bobbleheads on display, is temporarily closed due to COVID-19 but that doesn't mean they aren't working on new bobbleheads.
And to prove how unique times are right now, the newest bobblehead they're creating will be the first ever of a famous immunologist during a worldwide pandemic.
Dr. Anthony Fauci has been the Director of NIAID, the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases, since 1984. He's played a high-profile role lately in the face of this COVID-19 outbreak, briefing the public during White House pressers on measures being taken and advice on how to try and slow the spread of this coronavirus until it either plays out or medical science can develop a vaccine or other medications to control it. A lot of people are looking to him as a steady voice in the face of this crazy and uncertain time.
And that has inspired the push for something he probably never envisioned: his own bobblehead.
Phil Sklar, the Founder and CEO of the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum, noted that they've received numerous requests for a Dr. Fauci bobble on social media and through their website, where anyone can submit photos and suggestions for new bobbleheads. So they're not only going to make and sell Dr. Fauci's likeness on a bobblehead, they're going to put some of the proceeds to an excellent cause.
The bobbleheads sell for $25, and $5 dollars from every sale of the Dr. Fauci bobbleheads will be donated to the American Hospital Association in support of the 100 Million Mask Challenge, which works to provide critically needed PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) to health care providers and first responders.
