Chris & Rich Robinson of the Black Crowes, in advance of their Shake Your Moneymaker 2020 World Tour, embarked on an 11-show acoustic tour- essentially a warm-up - called "Brothers of a Feather." After shows in London and Amsterdam, the tour has 9 U.S. dates in intimate venues, including Chicago's Lincoln Hall in the Lincoln Park neighborhood that took place last night. I was able to check it out and wow - they're ready!
With about 500 in attendance - a packed house in this venue - the Robinson brothers kept it simple but lively, opening with a great-sounding "Jealous Again" followed by a slew of songs from their albums including "Oh Josephine" from their 20008 album Warpaint which Chris Robinson called "one of the best things Rich and I have ever written." "Hotel Illness," "Thorn in My Pride," and "How Much For Your Wings?" preceded and a big sing-along rendition of "Twice As Hard," which with just the acoustic guitar highlighted a series of a bluesy riffs that made the song the perfect combination of raw and real. It's probably no surprise that "She Talks To Angels" sounded acoustically very much like the record (well, the first minute or two of it) followed by a stripped-down version of "Remedy" that, while it didn't have the pounding drive of the bass, drum, and rhythmic guitar version that rocked radios on 1992, this acoustic version had all the elements that made it a jam in the first place.
For the encore, they played a cover of Little Feat's "Willin'" and bid the very happy crowd adieu, with a reminder about their major tour coming up.
Which means this is a good time to remind you that the Black Crowes are bringing their Shake Your Moneymaker 2020 World Tour to Milwaukee on August 22nd, when they'll play - with full instruments - the American Family Insurance Amphitheater. You can get tickets now, and you never know when we may have more for you on 95.7 BIG FM. Here are a few more pictures from the show. Looking forward to seeing them here in August!
Hey, when in Chicago...
