We’ve been hearing rumors about a possible Coming to America sequel for a while now, and now we finally have a release date to look forward to:August 7, 2020. Paramount, the movie studio making the film, also announced that Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Dolemite Is My Name) will be the film’s director.
In development for years, the sequel has apparently gone over a number of revisions already. The original Coming To America writers, Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield, penned the first version of the script. Kenya Barris was brought in to rewrite it in 2017.
Snooping around on the movie's IMDb page, the sequel is officially titled Coming 2 America, a clever way to titling! Eddie Murphy is confirmed to rejoin the sequel with a producer credit and, of course, reprising roles like Prince Akeem and Randy Watson. The only other cast member confirmed on IMDb is James Earl Jones, who will once again portray Prince Akeem’s father, King Jaffe Joffer. John Amos, owner of the legendary McDowell's restaurant, hopes to come back in the film; he even talked about it on the Wendy Williams show recently.
Eddie Murphy did release this statement: "After many years of anticipation, I’m thrilled that Coming to America 2 is officially moving forward. We’ve assembled a great team that will be led by Craig Brewer, who just did an amazing job on Dolemite, and I’m looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen.”
While exact plot details are still unknown, Deadline reports Prince Akeem will be on a return mission to the U.S. to find his long lost son, who is now the heir to the throne.
