This day (April 24) in 1976 was a unique one for Saturday Night Live (which that year was called "NBC's Saturday Night") as well as two of the Beatles. SNL producer Lorne Michaels decided to go on the show and offer the Beatles a tidy sum - $3,000 - if they'd reunite on the show. He even went to the point of showing them the check on camera.
Legend has it that John Lennon & Paul McCartney were watching nearby at Lennon's home at the Dakota right then and almost went down to surprise the show and claim the money, but they were too tired and decided against it. Paul McCartney "corrected" that version in this 2011 interview, saying that John Lennon had indeed seen it, but he wasn't there at the time. Lennon told him about it the following week and then they almost went there. Would've been crazy awesome to see though, right??
