- Medical experts are repeating what our parents told us for years: Stop picking your nose!
- As much as 91 percent of the population regularly goes mining for nuggets, statistics reveal -- and they're all putting their lives at risk by doing so, says University of Washington Professor Paul Pottinger. The nose is one of three ways the coronavirus can enter a human body, with the other two being the mouth and eyes, health officials say.
- While noses are lined with mucus and tiny hairs to filter out unwanted invaders, sticking a finger inside a nostril bypasses those defense systems, Pottinger says. Nose pickers can easily "transfer germs from your fingertips into the nose, which is the exact opposite of what you want," Pottinger says.
