WATCH: The Last Payphone In NYC Gets Hauled Away

On Monday, the last known payphones in New York City were hauled away.

I'm always surprised when I see payphones. When each of my kids saw one for the first time, I had to explain a bit how they work. Obviously they've only known cell phones for their entire lives.

Some payphones are being converted into WiFi hot spots. And some actually allow free calls. But I guess the idea of a dramatic phone call to some lonely person from a phone booth with a folding door and a thunderstorm outside will be lost on future generations.

I have no idea what a phone call might cost in a few years with today's inflation but you would probably need to carry a lot of quarters!
